Mint Pair of Glazed Ceramic Puppy Dog Bookends by L.J. Muller & Royal Fayence ZH

About the Item

Extremely rare, museum quality, mint condition & fully marked pair of 1920s bookends. In this day and age it is getting ever harder to find anything that is really handcrafted, let alone something of good quality. In 1920s and 1930s Europe many home accessories were made by real artisans and the quality of their creations is unlike anything that you find in stores today. Back in those days these incredibly well crafted pieces (and these puppy dog bookends are no exception) would have taken the artisan(s) a considerable amount of time to make. This is why top quality and signed pieces like this were only for the 'well to do'. This great quality made and perfectly glazed pair of bookends is designed (and marked) by Leendert Johan Muller and executed by one of Holland's best fayence makers of the early 1900s, Koninklijke Plateel Zuid Holland. This pair is also marked (on the bottom) with the original PLAZUID maker's mark (for Kon. Plateel Zuid Holland). To find a pair from the 1920s is extremely rare, to find them in mint condition makes them truly unique and to find a pair with the original designer's labels and marked by the top quality makers of Plazuid makes this pair truly museum worthy. And there even is a cherry on this already perfect pie, because one of these bookends even comes with the circular paper label that bears the name of the art gallery in the Netherlands where these would have been sold in the 1920s. It just does not get any better. The only thing that is not original are the pieces of paper and transparent tape on the bottom. They are there, because a previous owner filled these relatively light bookends with sand. Most people, back in the day, would probably not have used these works of art as bookends, but filling these with sand probably was a very sensible thing to do. Simply, because these bookends are nowhere to be found anymore and these are in perfect condition. This truly endearing, beautifully colored, mint condition and perfectly glazed antique pair will look great on a desk, on a side table and on a bookshelf, but they could just as well go on display in a museum. It would certainly not be the first time that one of our antiques is purchased by a curator/museum. Our fair price for this extremely rare and endearing pair includes perfect packing (in a custom made and padded box) and also free worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 2 to 4 days. Maximum width x height x depth per bookend: 5 x 4.33 x 3.75 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish and artistic and for the best craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again). You can shop all our 1500+ listings by pushing the button that reads 'View All'.
