Set of 1920s Hickory Shafted Golf Clubs

About the Item

Set of six playable Hickory Golf clubs. A good set of six hickory-shafted golf clubs by Charles Parsons of East Brighton golf club. The set includes 2 woods, Mid-iron, Mashie, Niblick and a Putting Cleek. The clubs are all branded 'Chas Parsons', all have new polished leather grips. The irons have hyphen face markings, forged in rustless iron with three carrying the cleek mark for Charles Brand of Carnoustie. Brand began making golf clubs in the 1890s but his 'Rampant Lion' cleek mark was in use from 1910 - 1922. The final iron has the 'Anchor' cleek mark of the Stadium Golf Co. (although the heads were actually forged for them by the Gourlays). The driver and brassie are with approximate lofts of 6° and 11°, shaft length 42 inches and 41 inches respectively. The Mid-iron is 26° with shaft 37 ½ inches long, Mashie is 35° with shaft 36 ¾ inches long & Niblick has a 48° loft and shaft length of 35 ½ inches. Charles William Parsons was born in Hove (1884), and was the golf professional at East Brighton Golf Club from 1909 until the late 1930's. This is a great set of playable original hickory-shafted golf clubs. If you are wishing to play some hickory golf the best balls to play with are low compression balls that will give at impact, such as ladies balls or soft feel balls. East Brighton Golf Club is steeped in tradition with many great golfing memories and experience. Past presidents include the Marquis of Abergavenny, the Earl of Chichester, Field Marshall Earl Haig and the Duke of Norfolk. If you take a trip around our Club House you will see many more familiar names on our honours boards. Circa 1890, Mr. Steyning Beard, a local landowner received a letter from a Mr. Abbey with a request to rent sufficient land for a nine hole course to accommodate 20-30 players at a rental of £15 per annum. This was agreed on 12th May 1893 and the Ovingdean Golf Club was formed. The first AGM was held in October 1893. The Club name was changed to Kemp Town Golf Club and the permitted membership increased. A new Lease was obtained and Mr Steyning Beard was asked to be a Vice President which he accepted. In 1901 it was proposed to change the name of the Club to Brighton and Kemp Town Golf Club, however Brighton and Hove Golf Club objected anticipating some confusion with this name so in June 1901 the Club became East Brighton Golf Club Limited and remains so today. In 1905 work commenced on a Club House and it was opened in November 1905. At this time extra ground was obtained by lease and William Park and James Braid were invited to tender for a contract to design a course on 130 acres. James Braid secured the contract and the work was completed ready for opening on 23rd May 1908. The course today is more or less as it was designed by James Braid. When Mr Steyning Beard died in 1912 the Club was asked if it wanted to purchase the land. The terms were not acceptable to the club and it was subsequently sold to Brighton Council for £30,000. The Club rented the course from the Council for a peppercorn rent of £200 rising to £4000 by 1992. At this time the Council attempted to increase the rent to £80,000 per annum. This was not accepted, and the Club went to arbitration. The club won their case and the rent was set at £9000 per annum. Negotiations between the Club and the Council were then opened with the objective of purchasing the land and the East Brighton Golf Club bought the land in December 1996 for £600,000. Vintage Hickory Golf Club, Mid Iron. A fine and nicely weighted dot punched faced mid iron by Josh Taylor (brother of John Henry "J.H." Taylor who was best known for his fine British Open play, winning his first Open in 1894 and went on to win it a further four times). The hickory shaft with polished leather grip, the rear of the club head marked 'Selected, Mid-iron, Warranted Hand Forged, Josh Taylor (signature) Richmond Park' with Taylor's 'Greyhound' cleek mark. The original hickory shaft stamped 'Josh. Taylor Selected'. Taylor was a professional at Aldeburgh and later at a number of other clubs: Seacroft (from 1907), Acton (from 1909), Sudbury (from 1920) and Richmond Park (from 1924). The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face. A great golf club iron in good original condition and very usable for modern hickory play. Approximate 24° loft & swing weight C5. Taken from Wikipedia: Joshua Taylor (1881 - 28 September 1957) was an English professional golfer, the younger brother of J. H. Taylor.
