In almost all countries on the globe there are -for good reasons- collectors of antiques that were handcrafted by German makers Erhard & Sohne. The finesse of the workmanship, the quality of the materials and the stunning designs and details have a universal appeal when it comes to their sheer beauty and elegance. And this crucifix with matching and complete candlesticks must be one of the rarest sets by Erhard & Sons that we ever came across. We say complete, because the candle sticks also come with the original brass bobeches and candle snuffers. The intricacy, the depth and the sharpness of the details, combined with the top quality of their designs are what Erhard & Sohne are best known for and this religious set certainly does not fall short in that respect either. The Latin text in the base of the cross reads AVE CRUX, SPES UNICA which means HAIL TO THE CROSS, OUR ONLY HOPE. This perfectly gilt and fully marked altar set of great quality and design would have cost a small fortune for the first owner.
We acquired this rare antique set in Amsterdam, from a family who's beloved father had past on and we were immediately certain that we would, again, find the perfect home for it. From the same home and from the same maker we also purchased a gilt bronze travel icon w. amazing filigree & hand painted Saints. That piece is also for sale in our gallery here. It is works of religious art like this that have lifted the spirit of many an individual and they have brought great style and beauty the world over. - Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. The beautifully detailed, gilt spelter corpus of Christ has some superficial damage and the top part of the crucifix leans slightly to the right, but otherwise this unique antique set could not be any better. Please also read our item description.
