About the Item

One-of-a-kind surfboard features two-sided art and artistry by Dogtown Z-Boys, Zephyr founder Skip Engblom. Skip Engblom owned this surfboard since the 1970s, in the last decade or so he added his own creative mark to it with superior graphics, color and restoration. Two-sided display incorporating color, verve, vibrancy, history and a splash of Hunter S. Thompson, with newspaper type incorporated under the glass, make this artful surfboard a collectible Dogtown icon. Signed along the stringer Skipperboy Engblom. History: This surfboard was found in the Topanga Canyon backyard of legendary surfer and shaper Robbie Dick in the early 1970s. It was a stripped-down longboard that was re-shaped into a transitional shorter board in the late 1960s. (Re-shaping was a common practice back in the day as perfectly good longboards were aplenty and were often reworked into shorter more modern shapes.) While what first might catch the eye is the amazing art and great overall look. Skip is quick to point out the merits of the board underneath the art: the V- bottom, the original giant raked fin, the unusual stringer bands in blue and clear that converge toward the center before widening again and the Proud JR on the tail (probably the re-shapers initials) making this board a perfect candidate and canvas for his work. The colors used on the board are predominantly those of faded denim blue and soft rose-red against the creamy-white undertone. A collage of cut-outs and quotes are sealed under the resin surface; offering both graphic and intellectual interest. In addition to the contribution of his masterful artistry, Skip is a historian of 1960s-1970s Popular Surf and Southern California Culture. He is a Local, State and National Treasure. He is a friend of ours, we love him and this board. Skip Engblom: Skip was the co-founder of Jeff Ho surfboards and owner of Zephyr Productions Surf Shop in Santa Monica California. Skip was the owner of the Zephyr skateboard team and a mentor to hundreds of local skateboard kids. He currently owns Santa Monica Airlines a skateboard company. Skip's Zephyr skateboard team was known as Z-Boys. Team riders included Jay Adams, Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Jeff Ho. Skip is an accomplished surfer, he featured regularly in competitions and regularly surfed The Cove. A Locals only, ugly surf spot in the remains of the burned down Lick Pier and Pacific Ocean Park Pier on the borders of Santa Monica and Venice in California. His antics and those of his Skate Team gave birth to both the Lords of Dogtown and Dogtown and Z- Boys movies, in which Skip had cameo roles. Whenever this era and subject are documented, researchers make one call....... Skip Engblom! This board carries his mark and the touch of his artistry; as such we view it as a truly rare cultural icon and we hope that you do too.
