Cameo with Gold '9-Karat' Frame; Brooch, Victorian Era, circa 1860

About the Item

Cameo with frame stamped openwork gold (9-karat) decorated with a symmetrical composition based on opposing "ces", simplified volutes and aveneradas forms in the equator of the piece (on both sides). The cameo itself, made in Cassius Cypraea (and therefore of the type known in the 19th century as "coral" in some european countries), presents a scene from classical mythology: to the left appears the Aurora, accompanied by a winged child with a torch (Phosphor , the morning star) and preceding the chariot of the Sun with four horses, which appears surrounded by the Hours and is driven by Apollo. Note the compositional and iconographic resemblance between the scene in this cameo and the fresco painted by Guido Reni between 1613 and 1614 at the Casino dell'Aurora Pallavicini (Rome, Italy), entitled "L'Aurora", which, moreover, was often used as inspiration for works in different physical mediums and techniques throughout the 19th century. Weight: 20.29 gr. Size: 6.5 x 5.5 x 1 cms.
