Italian 18th Century Architectural Carved and Giltwood Tabernacle as a Temple

About the Item

This Italian 18th century Louis XVI period hand carved and gilt wood architectural fragment probably was the central section of a bigger altar tabernacle that can now be used as a decorative free standing centre piece or as a base to expose a sculpture. The half-moon shaped tympanum embellished by the addition of scrolled carved element on the top supported by four fluted columns boasting decorated capitals inlaid with stylized acanthus leaves patterns and bases. The bases still have the original irons that were used to anchor the candle holders. The whole rest on a square base on which portions of the original lacquering, probably painted as a faux marble remain. The gouache gold leaf gilding is spectacular, with warm tones and an exceptional original patina. Faded gold in some portions of the object which only increases its charm. You can even see the red bolo, the preparatory layer for applying the gold leaf, underneath. This temple was professionally restored to fix the gold and avoid future gilding losses. Thanks to its size and classic proportions, this architectural element can give a twist to any decor. Measures: H. 75, Base 44x44 cm.
