Prudent Mallard attrib. American Rococo Revival Mahogany Tester Bed

About the Item

A tester bed, also known as a four-poster bed, is a bed with four vertical columns supporting a rectangular panel (the "tester") at the top, often with rails to allow curtains to be draped around the bed. This magnificent American Rococo Revival tester bed features crotch grain mahogany headboard with scroll top. The elegantly carved acanthus leaf posts are topped with an egg configuration (the signature of Prudent Mallard furniture- see last image) under the canopy, and are supported by large brass ball feet on coasters. Note many New Orleans beds have these types of feet because of the moisture problem. Mallard, a renowned furniture maker of New Orleans ranked with Henry Belter and on “Furniture Row.” The first two blocks of Royal Street where the epicenter for the Furniture trade in the mid-19th century was located. The shop was the source of high-style home furnishings that filled the huge plantation homes of the Gulf South. Inside measurement for mattress is 54.75 inches wide x 75 inches deep. Antique beds were never made in queen or king size at the time, but a special queen size mattresses can be adapted to this bed.
