Antique French Breton Bed Brittany Wedding French Country Carved Dark Oak c1890

About the Item

19th century French Breton Bed Carved Oak Brittany Wedding French Country. Unique antique French bed, direct from the Brittany region, highly carved with details particular to the Breton style. Most probably a commissioned piece for the wedding bed of aristocracy, as the carvings definitely ‘tell a story’ from engagement to marriage! The headboard is surmounted by a carved Brittany man’s profile, set in three spindle ships wheels, having male and female figures to either side, with thatched roof houses completing the crown. The primary headboard has spindle railing and a center panel with a carved rendering of the wedding proposal with the gentleman on bended knee to the lady, and a church in background. More open ‘ships wheel’ spindles on either side with fully carved panels and posts. The footboard panel seems to represent the wedding celebration with characters dancing along as two musicians play their instruments!! Elaborate carved scrolls and flourishes along the lower footboard and across the entirely of the rails. Solid, heavy and strong, well built by craftsmen of the period, circa1890. NOTE this is a European size bed and needs modification for US sizing. Measurements: Headboard, 61.25” ht. x 58.5” x 3”. Footboard, 39” ht. x 58.5” x 3”. Side rails, 7” x 76.25” x 1.5”. (Rail length excluding joints, 74.75”). This bed is a European size, which can easily be converted to an American size by a variety of methods: (1) purchasing inexpensive metal adapters online or (2) removing the rails and attaching the headboard and footboard to a universal metal bed frame.
