Period Dutch Baroque Silver Gilt Carved Wood Mirror

About the Item

This fine old mirror from circa 1740 is created in carved wood, gessoed and silver gilded. Its bold and heavy frame is centered at the top by a dramatic openwork crest consisting of large carved s and c scroll elements with a dramatic stylized shell just above the mirror frame. The frame itself is carved with corner, lateral and bilateral raised cartouches with shaped inner decorative elements giving the mirror presence and style along with weight and scale. The carving is very bold and has been touched up and repaired at some point but is in remarkably good shape. The silver gilding in matte and burnished work still in many places remains bright and good but has dulled with age in some areas. The glass itself is a newer replacement.
