19th c. Italian Rococo Giltwood Mirror with Original Mirror Plate

About the Item

Fine, beautifully aged, original giltwood mirror with original mirror plate in the Rococo style with flowing, symmetrical leaf motif, circa 1820. Elegant form, carved in sections. The Rococo period followed the Baroque period and is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement. The period began in the 1720's and continued through 1770. Rococo takes its name from the French word 'rocaille,' which means rock or broken shell. This period was characterized by elaborately carved, smaller and more functional pieces, the cabriole leg, and cherub, fruit, shell, flower, and scroll motifs.
