Cotswold School Walnut Arts & Crafts Hand Mirror
About the Item
A Cotswold School walnut hand mirror. English - Circa 1950. Attributed to Hugh Birkett.
The mirror is decorated with chip carving to the edge, with contrasting boxwood detail. There are some foxing marks to the mirror. It has been waxed and has a smooth feel. There is a minute hairline at the top, as shown in the last photograph.
The Cotswold School was a development of the Arts and Craft Movement started largely by Ernest Gimson and the brothers Sidney and Ernest Barnsley. The furniture is instantly recognisable with its simple lines, attention to the finest of details, and use of beautiful materials.
Cotswold School designs were crafted from local materials using traditional tools and techniques. Decorative details were added they generally took the form of traditional embellishment of the sort; the long chamfers, chip carved edge details.
