Antique 19th century Black and Gold French Louis Philippe mirror from 1888

About the Item

Presented here is a rare and exquisite antique French mirror, finished in black and gold, crafted in the year 1888. The mirror features the distinctive rounded top corners characteristic of the French Louis Philippe style. Its predominantly black frame is enriched with a stylized gilded engraving on the highest part. The classic pearl beading that surrounds the glass, as well as the outer edge, were gilded. The gilding on this mirror frame is painted, wherein gold leaf was dissolved in clear lacquer. The gold was patinated to soften the contrast with the black. The result is an exceedingly attractive mirror, complemented by its original mirror glass. The glass dates back to 1888, as indicated by the studio stamp on the back of the glass. The mirror glass displays numerous gentle spots, as attempted to be captured in the photos. In our studio, the mirror underwent repairs for a minor damage on the outer edge at the top. Additionally, the glass was temporarily removed from its setting, and the entire mirror was gently cleaned. The glass was securely repositioned, and the mirror is now ready for use.

This beautiful antique French Louis Philippe mirror has an ornate crest on top and floral ornaments in both lower corners. The gadrooned frame has a pearl beading surrounding the outer edge. This mirror is made in the south of France circa 1850 and is an early Louis Philippe mirror. The crest is not made in one mold, but it is composed out of multiple ornaments. Also, the mixture used to cast the molds has a big part of ground cattlebone. Later mirrors, when the demand for such mirror was increased significantly, had crests cast in one mold and the cattle bone was replaced for chalk. This mirror frame has been cleaned from its original golden color. The off-white color is the color of the raw material. The frame has been colored with an off-white patina to smoothen the color.
