Pair of English Carved Rococo Cartouche Shaped Looking Glasses
About the Item
A fine pair of English, carved rococo cartouche shaped looking glasses circa 1755 designed of c-scrolls and s-scrolls, crested with an acanthus spray, one scroll carved with egg and dart having acanthus sprays and rocaille, the frame with numerous sprays, the scrolls meeting at the base bracketing rocks and rocaille trailing down with further scrolls and terminating in a final acanthus spray. Gilding is both dry stripped and refreshed. The mirror plates are not original. Ht. 39 1/4" W. 15 1/2"
Rococo design was a reaction to the rather staid quality of baroque design with intentional obfuscation of form in the use of c and s-scrolls, flower sprays, acanthus leaves, and the use of chinoiserie and gothick elements with playful mixtures of scale of the traditional baroque elements such as the egg and dart as seen on the top most scroll of these frames.

Pair of Rococo Bronze and Gilt Sconces
By Jacques Caffieri
Located in Greenwich, CT
Very fine pair of gilt and patinated bronze two light sconces depicting Mars holding two branches, in the manner of Jacques Caffieri.
Jacques Caffieri was one of France's most important bronze casters during the reign of Louis XV. A nephew of Charles Le Brun, the chief designer and painter to Louis XIV, Caffieri had great talent of his own, so it isn't surprising he became sculpteur et ciseleur ordinaire des bâtiments du roi (Sculptor, Bronze Caster and Chaser for the King's Palaces).
In 1740, Caffieri's wife bought a royal privilege--a form of permit from the king--which allowed them to gild bronze as well as cast it within the same workshop; these two processes would usually have been done by separate businesses. After his son Philippe Caffieri...
