Antique 19thcentury French Monumental Large Gold Leaf Gilt Louis Philippe Mirror
About the Item
This monumental large gold leaf gilt mirror was made in France in the mid-19th century, circa 1830.
It has the upper rounded corners typical for Louis Philippe-style mirrors. The piece was elaborately decorated with fruit, flowers, leaves, acanthus, and C scroll ornaments. It was made in the first half of the 19th century completely by hand and before these pieces were manufactured on a more industrial scale, including the use of plaster cast ornaments.
The mirror has a solid pitch pine frame that was smoothened with gesso. The ornaments were made from a mixture of plaster and ground cattle bone with hide glue. The ornaments were reinforced with steel mesh. Mirrors made a few decades later were smoothened with gesso and the ornaments were cast in chalk. This was a less time-consuming and much easier method of working. The ornaments have many small cracks throughout the surface. This is inherent to the material and it is not damaged or weakened by it. The mirror is completely gold leaf gilt and patinated. The quality of the gilding is exceptional and in very good authentic condition.
The mirror plate is the authentic mercury silvered mirror plate and it shows the typical “mercury mist” and wear. The mirror plate is in very good condition given its age.
The mirror plate was removed in our atelier and the whole piece was gently cleaned. Small repairs to the bottom ornaments were made and the glass was firmly reinserted. A period pine back cladding to protect the glass was added. The mirror is now clean, solid, without damage, and ready for use.
A truly spectacular piece, a full-length mirror in the best quality aged gold, very rare and unique.
