19th Century Parisian Napoleon III Style Giltwood Mirror, Circa 1880

About the Item

The carvings of this Parisian giltwood mirror are quite impressive, highlighted by the sprawling crest inspired by nature. Hand-carved circa 1880, the motifs of the golden frame are indicative of the style of Napoleon III. Napoleon III, also known as the Second Empire, is an eclectic style that incorporates elements from the periods that preceded it. The rectangular glass is encircled by a continuous line of beading, followed by an ogee molding. Accompanied by the rounded upper corners and clean lines of the frame, these elements are in the style of Louis Philippe mirrors. The egg and foliate dart motif on the thick outer molding is reminiscent of Neoclassical themes seen in periods such as Empire and Louis XVI. Finally, the movement seen in the nature-inspired crown, with the curled leaves, floral margents, volutes, and stylized shell, were often seen with Louis XV furnishings. At over six feet tall, our Napoleon III giltwood mirror would be a welcomed addition to any bedroom or dressing area. It would also make a beautiful and functional mirror for a hallway, grand foyer, or living room.

18th Century Parisian Giltwood Barometer Thermometer
Located in Dallas, TX
This lovely giltwood barometer and thermometer was hand-carved during the Louis XVI period in Paris, France. During the late 1700’s, barometers were typically only owned by wealthy families. Over time, barometers began to be viewed as works of art and could be found in middle class homes throughout Europe. The highly detailed crown of our apparatus depicts a footed vase bursting with a floral display. The garland trails down in an arch shape until it reaches an angular platform adorned with molding and vertical fluting. The flowered swag continues behind the platform, transitioning into a pair of gadrooned leaves. Each gadrooned leaf terminates in a husked cornucopia overflowing with laurel leaves. A large circular barometer dial is positioned in between the cornucopias. Under the barometer is a looping lambrequin that borders the top half of the thermometer. A pair of gadrooned leaves runs behind and through the lambrequin, flanking the lower half of the thermometer. A fluted base beneath the thermometer sits in a gadrooned cup. The detail of the carvings on this late 18th century Parisian...

Finally, around the original beveled mirror itself appears one last triple tier of gold molding with beading accent. The original silver is starting to show distress at the bottom, typical for mirrors of this age, which to the cognoscenti only adds to the charm and allure!
