About the Item

A natural form captured masterfully in regular glass paneling, the shade of this Tiffany Studios New York lamp graduates from emerald green to a clean off-white as it unfurls, mimicking the shape of a nautilus shell. The shade tapers significantly as the hue darkens, the outward facing and downward oriented mouth of the shell being nearly twice the breadth of its narrow underside. The base of the lamp is also executed in a wonderful, naturalistic motif, but in this instance a more abstracted one. The bronze form extends upward from a base decorated with the sepals of a flower. A single, undulating stem breaks into two arms which serve to hold the shade. Materials: Leaded Glass, bronze Base Signed: Tiffany Studios New York 28628 with Tiffany monogram Literature: A similar lamp is pictured in Louis C. Tiffany: Artist for the Ages by Marilynn A. Johnson, London: Scala Publishers, Ltd., 2005, p. 120, cat. no. 21; and in Tiffany Lamps and Metalware: An illustrated reference to over 2000 models by Alastair Duncan, Woodbridge: Suffolk: Antique Collectors’ Club, 1988, p. 86, plate 331 Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: The shape of the exotic nautilus, found in the western Pacific, has long been the muse of architects, artists, and designers. One only has to look to Grecian columns, to spiral staircases, or to the nautilus cups of the sixteenth century for examples. Louis Comfort Tiffany made his own contribution to this tradition when he patented his design for the Nautilus lampshade on May 2, 1899, as one of his earliest ideas for leaded-glass lampshades.
