Pair of French Oil Lamps Opaline Glass Hand Painted Bronze Finishing

About the Item

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Originally these lamps were oil lamps, the mechanism with the wick has been modified in order to electrify them and make them more comfortable and modern; they are also prepared for the use of a lampshade (see photo), which is not supplied so that everyone can choose the preferred color and shape to match their decor; the solid base and the upper leaf decorations are in gilded bronze; fine and elegant workmanship makes the old wick mechanism very ornamental and pleasing; the lamps were made in France between 1920 and 1923 in an artisan workshop in Wimmenau, in the Vosges region, an area made famous by the important glassworks in the area (Saint-Louis, Lalique, etc.). For their manufacture has been used an opaline glass of the first choice, then a skilled painter-artist has painted by hand and in relief delicate flowers, shoots, and graceful leaves, putting meticulous attention to detail and choosing soft and pleasant colors, the lamps have these paintings on the front and back, so they are enjoyable at 360 °. The opaline is slightly translucent glass, opacified with phosphates and chlorides of sodium and calcium with the addition of tin and talcum oxides, thus obtained various shades of colors from pastel to milk-white; opaline glass is much less dense and opaque than milky glass (very similar to porcelain); the opaline in the strict sense is a French product that was born at the end of the 18th century - beginning of the 19th century in imitation of the Murano and German semi-opaque glasses of the seventeenth century and which has its moment of maximum splendor from 1820 to 1870 thanks to the achievements of the French factories ( Baccarat, Saint Louis and Choisy-le-Roy); from 800 onwards, the opaline spread all over the world with the handicraft production of everyday objects. France, from ancient times to modern times, is recognized as a producer of the best quality opaline glass.
