Pair of 1960´s Lamps, Piet Mondrian Style

About the Item

Pair of decorative 20th century composite lamps in Piet Mondrian style. Second half of the 20th century. Probably 1960´s. With shades. The hight 49cm is without shade. Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), Born in the Netherlands and died 1944 in New York, USA, was a Dutch artist. Mondrian is probably best known for his Compositions, paintings that consist of strict geometric shapes and primary colors like in this pair of lamps. Mondrian's importance lies in the development of a "pure" abstract art – he called it neoplasticism – where forms, lines and colors have their own absolute, independent values and interrelationships, completely freed from a descriptive role. He was a significant pioneer of abstract art. His painting was originally realistic, then became symbolic when he came into contact with Theosophy. When in Paris in 1912 he came in contact with Cubism and developed a completely abstract painting. He wanted to depict the pure reality that he perceived as something universal, which could only be expressed with the help of straight lines and the basic colors red, blue and yellow as well as black and white. Together with Theo van Doesburg, among others, he formed the de Stijl group in 1917, which represented an anti-individualist and anti-expressionist tendency and strove for objectivity. Mondrian moved to the United States in 1940 and created abstract compositions there, which reflect the city of New York and the pulse and rhythm of jazz music.
