Large Carved Jadeite 'flourite' Lamp
About the Item
The stone bodies of this type of interior illuminated lamp are often referred to as quartz, jadeite or even jade but are in fact of the fluorite family, a softer sone more easily carved. The hollow urn bodies are carved all around with tree trunks and flowers and have detachable tops with open carving. The urn sits on a carved polished wood base on a further metal and stepped wood base. The ability to have only the body of the lamp base lit from within can provide a beautiful warm glow. While carved in China the stone lamps were mostly for export and were originally wired in the United States and retailed through luxury department stores. This is one of the largest models known for this type of lamp. It is shown with an old Chinese style silk shade, China, circa 1930.
