Large 19th C. Austrian Orientalist Cold-Painted Bronze Figural Lamp, By Bergman

About the Item

This exceptionally large 19th-century Austrian Orientalist cold-painted bronze figural lamp was produced by the renowned Bergman foundry. Franz Xaver Bergman, known for his highly detailed and vibrantly enameled bronzes, specialized in Orientalist and exotic subjects. The lamp bears the Bergman foundry mark, confirming its origin and high-quality casting. Large-scale pieces of this caliber from Bergman are exceedingly rare, as the majority of his works were produced in smaller sizes for collectors. This particular example, with its imposing height and elaborate architectural elements, represents one of the most ambitious compositions from the foundry, making it a highly sought-after and difficult-to-acquire work. The back is signed with an impressed "B". The lamp features an elaborate mosque-inspired architectural scene, complete with a towering minaret, a domed roof adorned with a crescent finial, and intricate geometric detailing. The base replicates rugged stone steps leading to an arched portico supported by two twisted green columns. A figure clad in traditional garments kneels in prayer on a polychrome rug, positioned before a recessed alcove draped with a sculpted fabric curtain. Above, a suspended lantern element completes the scene, emphasizing the piece’s function as a lamp. A large red fabric canopy, stretched over wooden poles, extends from the side of the building, enhancing the three-dimensional effect of the composition. The walls feature finely sculpted lattice windows and engraved inscriptions, adding to the architectural authenticity. Bergman’s cold-painted bronze technique involved applying vibrant polychrome enamels directly onto the cast bronze surfaces without firing, resulting in richly detailed and lifelike coloration. Given the scale of this piece, the level of detail and preservation of its cold-painted surface is remarkable. The Bergman foundry was celebrated for its Orientalist works, catering to European collectors captivated by Middle Eastern and North African themes. Large-format Bergman pieces such as this are incredibly scarce, as most were produced in far smaller sizes due to the complexity and cost of production. This rare example stands as a testament to the foundry’s technical and artistic excellence, offering an unparalleled representation of Orientalist bronze sculpture. Austria, Circa: 1890
