Arts and Crafts Stained Glass Table or Desk Lamp w. Hand Painted Poppy Flowers
Located in Lisse, NL
Very rare, large size, top quality made and great condition antique lamp. This work-of-art-table-lamp from the earliest years of the 1900s is of museum quality and condition. Not only has it one of the most beautiful color combinations you ever saw, it also comes with extremely well painted and realistic poppy flowers. Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep, peace, and death: sleep because the opium extracted from them is a sedative and death because of the blood-red colour of the red poppy in particular. In Greek and Roman myths poppies were also used as offerings to the dead. The American Legion Family, for example, also uses the red poppy as its symbol. Design and quality wise this unique table lamp is right up there with some of the mushroom table lamps by Emile Gallé or Daum of France. However, the technique with which this stunning lamp was made differs very much from those lamps. If these poppy flowers would have only been hand-painted onto the glass then they would have already dried up and faded years ago. These leafs and flowers however were fired onto the glass in the keln (in several stages). This time consuming, risky and costly technique makes these poppy flower decorations extremely durable, very much like the stained glass scenes...
