Pair of wall lights in painted metal, brass, and frosted glass, Italian manufacture, 1950s In the early 1950s, Italian style underwent a transformation as evolving tastes and production methods led to a departure from tradition, embracing new forms and materials. Industrially inspired yet with a refined, domestic touch, this pair of wall lamps perfectly captures the spirit of the time. The lights feature a painted metal box-shaped base housing the bulbs, complemented by a frosted glass diffuser. While the design is distinctly square, a subtle curvature in the glass panel adds a striking detail that is both intentional and evocative, serving as the conceptual centerpiece of this intriguing design. It’s impossible not to draw a parallel with the markedly convex screens of early television sets, iconic objects of desire at the time. These devices, almost magical for a society tentatively exploring the potential of a new medium—still naively defining itself as something more than a radio but less than cinema—carry a similar aura.
