Pair of Monumental Louis XVI Style Carved and Giltwood Wall Sconces, 20th C.

About the Item

Pair of Monumental Louis XVI Style Carved and Giltwood Wall Sconces, 20th Century A striking pair of French large-scale Louis XVI style wall sconces, richly carved in giltwood and gilt tole, each issuing three candle-style lights. Executed in the classical neoclassical manner, the backplates are carved with symbols of Enlightenment: flaming torches bound with wheat stalks, laurel leaves, and ribbon-tied crests—emblems of knowledge, prosperity, and victory. The scrolled arms are adorned with delicate rose foliage in gilt metal, and the entire form is crowned by a dramatic hand-carved bow. Dimensions: Height: 39 in. (99.06 cm) Width: 15 in. (38.1 cm) Depth: 7 in. (17.78 cm) Note: These items will be professionally packed at the expense of the seller to allow for parcel shipping. Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Some old repairs, scattered chips, and minor losses throughout, particularly to giltwood tips and ribbon flourishes, as shown in detail photos. Wired for electricity, but not tested. Provenance: A Private Collection, 1107 Fifth Avenue, New York City Style: Louis XVI (in the manner of) Neoclassical Revival 20th Century Design Similarities: The elegant use of flaming torches, ribbon crests, floral stalks, and scrolling tole candle arms is closely aligned with lighting designs produced by Maison Baguès and Maison Jansen in the 1940s–1960s. The formal symmetry, large scale (39” high), and the combination of carved giltwood with gilt metal arms are hallmark traits of these firms' high-style neoclassical lighting. These statement sconces would lend opulent charm to a grand hallway, flanking a mirror, or anchoring an interior with old-world elegance.

Vintage Louis XVI Style Italian Giltwood Wall Mirror in Floral Basket Form
Located in Morristown, NJ
First half 20th century, Italy, a lovely giltwood mirror in the Louis XVI style. The mirror is in the form of a large flower basket with tied ribbon crest, the basket handle is entwined with an asymmetrical meandering vine. The mirror looks to be original. The back is wood paneled. The carving of a straight basket base would allow for use as an overmantel mirror. This mirror would be a great addition to a smart powder room, entryway or guest bedroom to name a few possibilities. It is an unusual and beautiful form, and not one that we have seen before.
