Pileo' Floor Lamp by Gae Aulenti for Artemide, Italy 1972

About the Item

The ‘Pileo’ floor lamp, designed by Gae Aulenti for Artemide in 1972, is a rare space age classic. The two-tone silhouette of the lamp, with its enameled metal cylindrical base and arched plastic arm, achieves a striking balance of bold geometry. The large, adjustable lamp shade pivots to direct light precisely where needed. The Pileo lamp appears in Space: 1999 and in episodes of Doctor Who, including on the planet Gallifrey in "The Invasion of Time" (1978) and inside the TARDIS from 2010 to 2012. Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) was a prolific Italian architect, art director, and product designer renowned for her post-war style and industrial designs. She was the art director of Fontana Arte and designed a range of modern, innovative pieces. Aulenti was one of few women in the field at the time and is regarded as one of the most iconic figures in Italian design and architecture. Gae Aulenti’s collaboration with Artemide, a leading Italian lighting manufacturer, is a notable chapter in the history of modern design. Starting in the 1970s, this partnership brought forward some of Aulenti’s most iconic lighting designs. One of their most significant collaborations resulted in the creation of the Pileo floor lamp, introduced in 1972. Aulenti’s ability to merge architectural principles with everyday objects is evident in this design, making it a standout piece. Condition: Great vintage condition, with light wear and surface scuffs. A foot switch has recently been added by our team of restorationists. Accepts one standard base light bulb.
