Pair of Mid-Century Modern Square Chandeliers in Glass and Nickel

About the Item

A pair of square Modernist pendant lights comprising small glass elements formed together with original nickeled bronze brackets into a single square unit and supported by a round canopy with rod stem. The juxtaposition of the linear and geometric patterns in the glass amidst the overall cubist architectural shape create a striking harmony. These fixtures were created during the 60's and 70's as a modular system of square units that can be grouped together to form different shapes and sizes. If need be, these lights can hover from the ceiling almost as a flush mount. The chandelier can be custom altered in height either lengthened or shortened for a surcharge. Newly wired for US standards. Holds 4 candelabra sockets that can house either incandescent or LED bulbs. The glass is clear / white in color. Any variance seen in the photos are from the camera flash. Very good condition. The small metal clips are in the original nickel finish and thus some may have very, very slight pitting, abrasion or wear that is barely visible and commensurate with age. Moderne, Midcentury, Art Deco, Industrial, Italian design, Dachstein series, dining table, dining room, hallway fixtures, pool table, billiard, bathroom, entry foyer, bedroom. Due to periods of historic turmoil, a lot of the glass designers worked for multiple lighting manufacturers. Entire sections of countries were annexed by adjoining countries. Borders changed. Czechoslovakia was under German occupation and rule. After the war, from 1948-1990, it became part of the Eastern Bloc. As a socialist and satellite state of the Soviet Union, it had an economy of command where rules, production … were determined and set by the government. In 1958, Czechoslovakia exhibited in the Brussels World Fair and gained world -wide attention for using modern materials of steel, glass and plastic. The country even won the main and several other prizes for its lights. This new style of lighting became known as the Brussels style, a symbol of the golden decade of progress, reform and political liberation. But in 1968, the Warsaw Pact consisting of the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary invaded with the intention to forcibly halt the reforms. East Germany canceled and pulled out of the pact hours before the operation.

Rectangular Billiard Style Glass Rod and Nickel Chandelier, P. Fargette, 1940
By P. Fargette
Located in New York City, NY
This unique rectangular shaped modernist chandelier, circa 1940, is attributed to P. Fargette. A French chandelier of billiard style and Industrial Design with an elongated demilune edge profile, stepped flat frosted bottom glass and sides formed of stacked glass rods which give a ridged appearance. Twin rods lower the chandelier from a protracted demilune shaped nickel-plated bronze canopy which invokes the shape of the chandelier. The chandelier is accented on either end by an eight pointed star, a favorite design motif prominent in the 1940s. Pyrex glass rods as seen on the sides of the chandelier were first used in this way in 1944 by Frank Lloyd Wright in his controversial Johnson Wax Building...
