Small Kamba Prestige Stool With Copper and Brass Wirework Decoration, Kenya
About the Item
This early twentieth-century prestige stool comes from the Kamba culture in Kenya. Consisting of a low-set, richly decorated circular seat supported by three finely carved legs, stools such as this would mainly have been used and kept by Kamba elders as a symbol of prestige and importance.
Adorning the top of the seat is an intricate, inlaid wirework design, which displays a shimmering two-toned pattern of twisted copper and brass wires. The underside of the seat has also been decorated, in which the metal has been crafted into various geometric and bird motifs.
