Hand Stitched American Silk Quilt in “Raising Barn” Pattern Circa the Late 1800s

About the Item

This stunning silk quilt, hand-stitched in the late 1800s in New England, is a radiant example of American textile craftsmanship. Using the beloved “Log Cabin” block technique, the design—often referred to as the “Raising Barn” pattern—captures the architectural rhythm and symbolic warmth of early American life. Composed of individually hand-cut and hand-stitched silk pieces, each block reflects meticulous attention to detail and a refined sense of color and structure. The luminous silk fabrics lend the quilt a subtle sheen, elevating its traditional pattern into a striking visual statement. A true labor of love, this quilt embodies the patience and dedication of its maker. Its fragile nature and exquisite construction make it not only a rare surviving example of 19th-century silk quilting, but also a highly collectible piece of American folk art. Too delicate for everyday use, this quilt is ideally suited for display—as a wall-hung textile, it becomes a sophisticated tapestry, offering both historic richness and timeless elegance.
