"Legends of the West-Indian Chief" by Chris Calle, Mixed Media Painting

About the Item

Presented is the original mixed media illustration of "Legends of the West - Indian Chief" by Chris Calle. The vibrant illustration features a head and shoulders portrait of a Native American chief. The chief is wearing an elaborate feathered and beaded headdress. Chris Calle painted this in December of 1993, for inclusion in the “Legends of the Old West” stamp series. This painting was published on the 1994 Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World “Legends of the Old West” Collector's Panel. When the “Legends of the Old West” stamps were issued on October 18, 1994, a set of postal cards with the same designs was also issued. Although it is common practice now, this was the first time that a set of stamps and cards shared the same designs. Chris Calle has earned an international reputation as a stamp designer and illustrator. His first FDC cachet drawing is from 1969 and depicts Armstrong and Aldrin on the Moon. His interest in art continued in college, where he earned a BFA at the University of Michigan School of Fine Art in 1983, majoring in illustration. One of his first professional assignments was the Harry S. Truman stamp in the Great Americans series. In the next 12 years, Chris designed over 30 U.S. stamps, and hundreds more for entities as diverse as Sweden, Marshall Islands, and the United Nations. And over nearly two decades, Chris produced more than 1,000 Fleetwood FDC cachet paintings. Chris Calle designed the 1989 $2.40 Priority Mail 20th Anniversary Moon Landing stamp, which depicts Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin planting the American flag on the Moon. He then jointly designed two stamps in 1994 for the 25th Anniversary of the Moon Landing with his father Paul Calle, who had designed the iconic First Man on the Moon stamp in 1969. Chris Calle’s outstanding work also appears in many publications and is represented in corporate, private, and museum collections throughout the world. CONDITION: Mixed-media on illustration board. "U.S. Flag Behind Capitol" by Ron Sloan, Mixed Media Painting, 1985
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is “U.S. Flag Behind Capitol,” an original mixed-media painting by American artist Ron Sloan. The drawing shows an intricately detailed rendering of the front entrance to the United States Capitol building. Behind the Capitol is a large, waving American flag, set outside an orange-hued rounded rectangle. Sloan created this stunning artwork in February of 1985, for use on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 22 cent “Flag Over Capitol” stamp, issued in March of that same year. The painting depicts the iconic neoclassical building from the east orientation, with it’s dome towering overhead. Plans began in May of 1854 to build a new cast-iron dome for the United States Capitol. The then-architect of the Capitol Thomas Walter and his team were sold on the aesthetics of a new dome, as well as the utility of a fire-proof one. A year later, on March 3, 1855, President Franklin Pierce signed off on the appropriation of $100,000 to build the dome. Construction began in September of that year with the removal of the first dome raised by Charles Bulfinch. Over the next 11 years, the dome rose over the nation's capital. By December of 1863, Walter was able to set the bronze sculpture “Statue of Freedom” atop the dome. Thomas Walter resigned in 1865 and his replacement, Edward Clark, assumed the role of finishing the last aspects of the dome. Just over a month later, in January 1866, Constantino Brumidi, who had been hired to paint a fresco above the interior dome's oculus, removed the scaffolding used...

“The Restaurant of the House of Representatives” Engraving by Harper's Weekly
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This original wood engraving is titled “The Restaurant of the House of Representatives, Washington, DC.” It was published as a double-page image, in the August 12, 1893 issue of the famous 19th century newspaper Harper’s Weekly. The print was illustrated by Charles Stanley Reinhardt. The House Restaurant, a unique part of life in the Capitol, has been in the same location since the 1857 Capitol Expansion. Congressional members’ busy work schedule made the availability of food on site a necessity. But the restaurant also served as an informal meeting spot for members to continue conversations and deal making. This 1893 print illustrates the convivial atmosphere. Details including elegantly dressed tables...
