Oak Six-Tiered Stackable Wine Rack, Europe, 1970s

About the Item

This 1970s standing wine bottle rack is a visual treat with a highly functional design. The design is perfect to store and to display bottles, not to mention that wine corks will stay wet if stored horizontally, which is vital to prevent drying and crumbling. The tiered construction consists of six racks ending in a solid oak top. The individual racks can be freely added or removed, allowing a high level of customization. Unlike most wine racks, this model has the so-called bull-nose corners on its sides instead of the horizontal wine holders. On the sides, dents are carved into the wood to serve as handles, making it easy to lift the racks. Playfully, each of the six wine stacks is shaped like a bottle with three wooden laths; two arranged symmetrically and one in the back to prevent the bottles from falling out. This shows how functionality goes hand in hand with a creative design to create a balanced, stylish look, similar to Lou Hodges’s aesthetic. The two-toned oak is the perfect material with an interesting pattern, close grain and smooth surface that lets the various shapes and forms to manifest themselves beautifully. A traditional carving hardwood, oak is extremely strong, dense, and durable, which makes it less prone to decay and rotting. Oak is considered one of the finest and sturdiest materials to work with in woodworking. With its tiered construction, this wine rack can hold over 20 bottles of wine. Even with a primarily functional role, its aesthetic dimension stands out thanks to the elemental look of the solid oak and the impeccable woodworking. Condition: In good vintage condition.
