A Silver Snuff Box Sadagura, Ukraine Circa 1880
About the Item
A silver snuff box from Sadagura, Ukraine, circa 1880, is a distinctive piece reflecting the regional craftsmanship and style of the late 19th century.
SADAGORA (Rom. Sadagura ; Ger. Sadagora ), is a town in Chernovtsy district, Ukraine. From 1775 until World War I Sadagora passed to Austria and between the two world wars was within Romania. The first Jews settled there during the 17th century.
Sadagora was an important center of Hasidism, from the period of Austrian rule over Bukovina until the liquidation of the community. Most of the Jewish inhabitants of the town belonged to the *Ruzhin Ḥasidim. R. Israel Friedmann of Ruzhin arrived in Sadagora after he was released from prison in Russia and established a magnificent "court" there. After World War II the center of the Sadagora dynasty was transferred to Eretz Israel.
The box is rectangular in shape, with smooth, polished silver surfaces and an intricate checkered engraving pattern on the exterior. The design features traditional Eastern European motifs, such as floral patterns, geometric shapes, and scrollwork, adding a rich decorative element to the piece.
The hinged lid has a tight fit and is adorned with a central cartouche, portraying a neighborhood landscape topped by a banner bearing the phrase "ולציון יאמר איש" meaning "And to Zion one will say". At the bottom of the container, the year the snuff box was made is hinted at in a biblical phrase and the name of the owner of the snuff box "Ben Tzion" is engraved at center.
The craftsmanship demonstrates the skill of Ukrainian silversmiths during this period, with fine details and careful finishing. This silver snuff box combines functionality with an artistic folk art beauty, reflecting the cultural and historical significance of Sadagura during the late 19th century.

French Medieval Style Silver Jewelry Box, circa 1880
Located in Miami, FL
A remarkable intricately designed, handcrafted silver box, circa 1880s.
We were told that this box is sterling silver and that the makers mark "M" is that of "M. Mayer". Maurice MAYER was a very prestigious silversmith. Research shows that he was an "Orfèvre de l'Empereur", Napoleon Bonaparte, 1860-1870.
The Minerva hallmarks are not visible, may have been rubbed off from use and cleaning. No documentation.
This intricately carved box depicts the romantic poem of Le Roman de la Rose (The Romance of the Rose). Comes with the original lock and key.
Le Roman de la Rose, begun by Guillaume de Lorris circa 1230 and completed, in a different style, circa 1270-1280, by Jean de Meun, builds on the concept of courtly love found in the poetry of the troubadours. The authors create a complex allegory of the romance between the Lover and the Rose. In the quest to pick the Rose (to achieve the conquest of love), the flower and its attendants represent the Lady and her sentiments while being wooed.
In the first part of the poem, written by de Lorris, the Lover recounts his dream, ending with the winning of a kiss from the Lady. In the dream, the Lover discovers a walled garden and gains entrance thanks to a beautiful young woman. He meets Diversion and dancers who represent courtly values such as Beauty and Generosity. A tour of the garden brings him to a beautiful bed of roses by the Fountain of Love...
