Set of 4 Georgian Chinoiserie Decorated Master Salts by John Edward Terrey & Co.

About the Item

Set of four Georgian Chinoiserie decorated master salts by John Edward Terrey & Co., London. They are hallmarked 1825-1829. The inside of each is lightly gilded and each has a small armorial engraved on the side. The main bodies are heavily chased with garlands of flowers and Chinese chinoiserie garden scenes of Chinamen dressed in oriental costumes; a figure under the shade of a parasol smoking an opium pipe, another mounted on a horse crossing a bridge, a third figure in a garden with a Chinese pheasant perched on a farming tool. This decoration can be seen on other silver pieces produced by this firm. Chinoiserie decoration of this quality is very rare and typical of the popularity of everything Oriental being collected in this period. The armorial is inscribed "Salus In Fide," below a gloved hand holding a cross, "Reliance In Faith." Terrey registered his trade mark with his partner Samuel Hennell in 1814, and his own mark in 1816. He is still documented as a silversmith in Hatton Garden in 1841. In 1851 he moved to Sydenham, Lewisham in Kent. According to the ‘England & Wales Deaths Index’ he lived until 1859. The Metropolitan Museum has a teapot by Terrey with similar chinoiserie decoration Accession Number: 1998.459 (last photo). Total weight 582.8g. N.P. Trent has been a respected name in antiques for over 30 years with a large collection of period furniture, art and decorative accessories.

Modern Georgian by Allan Adler Sterling Silver Flatware Set Dinner
By Allan Adler
Located in Big Bend, WI
Allan W. Adler (May 8, 1916 - December 3, 2002) His clean, unadorned and well-crafted style was strongly influenced by the traditional work of early American silversmiths and the contemporary work then being done in the Northern European countries of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. It was a unique and one-of-a-kind style of silversmithing. Adler was an American silversmith, known as "silversmith to the stars". Beginning his career as an apprentice in 1938, Adler designed silverware and hollowware in shapes inspired by the Modernist art movement of the early 1900s. Adler learned the craft of silversmithing from noted 5th generation silversmith Porter Blanchard, one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts movement in California. His name became associated with Hollywood glamour in the early 1940s, and he was commissioned to design mini-Oscars for Academy Award winners, crowns for Miss Universe and Miss USA...
