A very good large silver swing handle basket of pierced oval form. The arched swing handle with two cast female busts arising from a leaf capped double C-scroll support. The cast and applied rim of shaped foliate and floral entwined decoration. The central bowl of the basket engraved with a rocaille cartouche containing an armorial. The top of the handle is decorated with a leaf form cartouche within which is the crest of a deer. The sides of the raised basket with hand cut pierced decoration. The whole standing on four cast and applied legs, decorated with a beautiful scrolling foliate design rising to high relief female faces, on leaf-form pad feet. Hallmarked to the underside for London 1747 by Edward Aldridge. The underside of the handle bears the lion passant and maker’s mark, both struck twice. This exceptional and rare antique sterling silver soup ladle has been crafted in the Hanoverian pattern. The posterior surface of the handle terminal is embellished with a contemporary engraved crest of a serpent nowed below a coronet. This fine example of antique silver cutlery has a plain rounded bowl with a rounded heel. The anterior surface of the ladle features a pip to the handle terminal. The reverse of this impressive Georgian ladle bears the original scratch weight of 10 troy ounces and 1 pennyweight (10.05 troy ounces) above the lap/scarf joint solder line; as to be expected the measured weight has subtly diminished in keeping with age to 9.9 troy ounces.
