Georgian English Sterling Silver Candlesticks
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique George III English sterling silver candlesticks; part of our Georgian ornamental silverware collection.
These exceptional antique George III English sterling silver candlesticks have a cylindrical knapped, tapering form to a circular spreading base, all in a desirable Classic English style.
The bell-shaped capitals are encompassed with embossed fluted ornamentation and retain the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconces.
Each sconce is encompassed with an applied bead decorated border the anterior rim and the surface is embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved crest displaying out of a coronet an ostrich's head between two wings.
The knops to the upper portion of the fluted columns is embellished with further applied bead decoration in addition to fabric swags accented with bow motifs.
The candlesticks have circular swept bases encompassed with further bead decoration and embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved coat of arms above the motto 'Turris Fortis Mihi Deus' - God is my tower of Strength.
Both silver candlesticks have the weighted bases as to be expected and retain the original turned mahogany plateau to the underside.
These impressive Georgian silver candlesticks were crafted by John Winter, John Parsons & Charles Hall of John Winter & Co.
Condition
These antique George III Sheffield silver candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver and exceptional quality for their type. Each candlesticks has some minor blemishes and dings as to be expected in keeping with age, but can be considered to be in exceptional condition. The applied decoration to the knop has some minor wear, however the bead decorated borders are very sharp and the bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each base and part hallmarks to the sleeve of each sconce are all very clear.

A fine pair of vintage Elizabeth II English sterling silver two-light candelabra in the George I style; an addition to our ornamental silverware collection.
These fine vintage Elizabeth II sterling silver candelabra have a plain circular form, in the George I style.
Each impressive two-light candelabrum retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit scrolling arms, which support two rounded waisted capitals with plain circular dished drip pans.
These versatile vintage candelabra can be used as candlesticks once the arms (labra) are detached.
The knopped stems are surmounted on sunken wells, to tooled decorated circular spreading bases.
The filled bases retain the original leatherette covering to the underside.
The base of each was made by Richard Comyns of William Comyns & Sons Ltd and the labra were crafted by William Bruford & Son; these items will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system the bases are struck with the date letter 'd' and the labra bear 'e'.
Two different maker's crafting alternative components of candelabra is not an uncommon practice due to the manufacturing process.

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver Chamberstick (chamber candlestick) has a plain circular form in the George I style.
The well is plain and unembellished, encompassed with a plain elevated border.
The plain cylindrical capital retains the original detachable hallmarked sconce ornamented with a plain applied moulded border.
This antique chamberstick is fitted with a stylized Trefid pattern handle, embellished with two contemporary bright cut engraved crests of a squirrel sejant eating a nut to the right of an elephant and castle.
The underside of the handle features a decorative rounded socket.

A magnificent, exceptional, fine and impressive, pair of large antique Georgian English sterling silver architectural column candlesticks; part of our ornamental silverware collection.
These magnificent antique Georgian English sterling silver candlesticks have a plain subtly tapering columnar form.
The large and impressive Corinthian capital of each candlestick retains the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconce ornamented with a plain moulded rim.
The cylindrical columns are supported by a cuboid plinth to an impressive plain square stepped three tier base.
Each plinth is embellished with a fine and impressive bright cut engraved coat of arms depicting the Head family coat of arms encircled with a belt accented with the family motto 'Study Quiet'.
The bases retain the original contemporary engraved inscription 'A token of respect from Francis Head to her aunt Dame Mary Ann Head. 1803' to the lowest tier.
Both candlesticks are fitted with turned mahogany bases to the underside.
These magnificent Georgian candlesticks were crafted by George Eadon, George Kibbles & John Weaver of George Eadon & Co.
The title ‘Dame’ was the traditional style for the wife of a baronet at this time and before although it was interchangeable with the title ‘Lady’.
