About the Item

This elegant American tea service in Britannia Metal consists of three pieces: a teapot, a sugar bowl, and a coffee pot/chocolate pot. The teapot and sugar bowl feature a round design with handles, while the coffee pot/chocolate pot has an oblong shape. All three pieces are fitted with lids topped with knobs. What stands out is the fine hand-engraved decoration, showcasing typically Victorian leaf motifs enriched with elegant and intricate scrollwork. The engraving extends from the lid to the middle of each piece, where it transitions into a decorative cartouche containing an engraved "K," presumably the initial of the original owner. On the bottom of each piece, a hallmark identifies the manufacturer and year of production. The service was crafted by Wilcox Silver Plate Co. of Meriden, Connecticut, in 1867, as verified by the hallmark. The number "1952" indicates the model of the service, information sourced from Dorothy T. Rainwater’s “Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers” (page 226). The Wilcox Silver Plate Co. originated in 1865 as Wilcox Britannia Co., founded by Jedediah and Horace Wilcox, Charles Parker, Aaron Collins, Hezekiah Miller, and others. The company operated in Meriden, CT, with a showroom located at 6 Maiden Lane, New York. The name was changed to Wilcox Silver Plate Co. in 1867, the same year this service was produced. In 1869, the company acquired Parker & Casper Co., a firm specializing in silverware. In 1898, Wilcox Silver Plate Co. became one of the founding members of the International Silver Company. The following year (1899), the Middletown Silver Plate factory was closed, and production was moved to the Wilcox facility. The Superior Silver Co. brand, originally from Middletown, was produced by Wilcox. The Wilcox factory ceased operations in 1941 due to metal shortages during World War II. After the war, Wilcox designs were manufactured in other International Silver Company plants. In 1961, the brand was rebranded as Webster Wilcox following the merger of Wilcox Silver Plate Co. with E.G. Webster & Son and other divisions of International Silver. Finally, in 1981, Webster Wilcox was acquired by Oneida. Britannia Metal is a material introduced between 1769 and 1770 by Sheffield cutler James Vickers. This metal, an improved version of pewter, marked the decline of traditional pewter and laid the foundation for the electroplating industry. Britannia Metal is composed primarily of tin, with a higher proportion of copper and antimony, and is free from lead. It is notable for its workability, as it can be turned, stamped, and electroplated with silver. With the advent of electroplating around 1840, Britannia Metal became widely used for creating silver-plated items. Due to its softness, it was nicknamed “Soft Metal” (in contrast to the harder “Hard Metal”), allowing for deeper and more defined engravings, as exemplified by the intricate details on this tea service. Britannia Metal was both exported and produced worldwide, with the United States among its leading manufacturers. Condition: The service is in good overall condition, with a minor dent on the body of the chocolate pot (see photo). Dimensions: Coffee pot: Length 22 cm, Width 14 cm, Height 21 cm. Teapot: Length 22 cm, Width 14 cm, Height 12 cm. Sugar bowl: Length 17 cm, Width 13 cm, Height 10 cm. For all shipments, we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, Styrofoam, etc.) to ensure maximum protection and safety of the items.
