Weeping Gold Mid Century Modern Set Creamer, Sugar Bowl, Ewer
About the Item
Serving set of covered sugar bowl, creamer, and small syrup pitcher or ewer was made by Dixon Art Studio in 22k Weeping Gold technique. Weeping Gold process was a multi-step process that included two rounds of glaze. It started with a wax application in random patterns; the glaze was applied over it. The wax would melt when pieces will be fired, leaving areas that were under wax matte and creating a speckled appearance; a glaze of 22k gold would be added to create the final look before final firing in the kiln. The style got its name from the random appearance of the gold splotches.
Weeping Gold pottery was first manufactured by Kingwood Pottery of East Palestine, Ohio in the early 20th century. It reached the height of its popularity through the 1950s, and the non-patented glazing process was used by several manufacturers, all in the same general area of Ohio. Dixon Art Studios ceramics was made at Bel Terr China in East Palestine, Ohio; it was founded in 1961 by Belden Ham and his wife, Terry Ham. Most clay and pottery factories had ceased producing weeping gold by the early 1970s.
All pieces have Weeping Gold finish applied to exterior surfaces only, with interior surfaces left solid white. Sugar bowl and creamer have their bottoms decorated as well; both pieces are not signed. Syrup pitcher is marked on the bottom with Dixon Art Surio 22k gold.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
