Louis Philippe Porcelain

LOUIS PHILIPPE STYLE

Known as the “Citizen King,” Louis Philippe reigned from 1830 to the Revolution of 1848 with the support of the upper bourgeoisie. Whereas the monarchs of 18th-century France, including Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI, dictated aesthetics through the decadence of the aristocratic court, Louis Philippe had a more down-to-earth presence. He could be seen walking the streets like an ordinary person, carrying his own umbrella and shaking hands with subjects. Antique Louis Philippe–style furniture reflects a sense of simplicity and the sovereign’s passion for the country’s history, such as his establishment of a Museum of the History of France at Versailles, which had been mostly disused since the French Revolution.

Middle Ages, Gothic and Renaissance design informed a nationalist style that celebrated this heritage, with the hodgepodge of influences becoming prevalent in the homes of the bourgeoisie. Cabinetmakers Guillaume and Jean-Michel Grohé created reproductions of historic pieces for the king as well as royal houses abroad. Louis Philippe commissioned sculptor François Rude to create patriotic monuments that paid tribute to military heroes, while designs for furniture published by Claude-Aimé Chenavard, an ornamentalist who conceived widely loved objects for the Sèvres manufactory, further helped spread a revival of Renaissance style.

The rounded profiles of authentic Louis Philippe tables and chairs were preferred in the apartments rather than palaces being furnished by the affluent middle and upper classes. Ornamentation was minimal on the finely crafted pieces, such as large rectangular mirrors adorned with gold and silver leaf finishes and subdued carvings. The popular Louis Philippe commodes were solidly made with clean lines that showed off the grain of the wood and were often topped with marble surfaces.

Located in Atlanta, GA
Sevres, 20 Pieces (10 Sets) Circa 1846. Made for the Chateau Des Tuileries service of Louis Phillippe This exquisite Sèvres porcelain cup and saucer grouping (10 sets) dates to the Louis-Philippe era, featuring the royal monogram of King Louis-Philippe I (reigned 1830–1848). The monogram, prominently displayed on the saucers, is encircled by a laurel wreath and crowned, signifying its royal provenance and connection to French aristocracy. The set was likely commissioned for or associated with the Château des Tuileries, as indicated by the markings on the underside. The design includes a regal cobalt blue border with intricate gilded ivy patterns, hand-painted cherubs, and floral medallions on the tea cups. Gilded accents, including the delicate handles, enhance the opulence of this neoclassical-style set. The artistry and precision reflect the mastery of the Sèvres porcelain factory during this period. This Louis-Philippe monogrammed tea set is a rare and historically significant collection, ideal for collectors of French royal memorabilia or fine European porcelain...

Sèvres Set of 6 Porcelain Plates from the Royal Hunting Service, 1847
Located in London, GB
On offer is a spectacular set of 6 plates made by Sèvres in 1847. These plates form part of the "Royal Hunting Service", a massive service commissioned by King Louis Philippe at the château de Fontainebleau in 1846 for use after large hunting parties. Sèvres porcelain is among the most famous in the world. The French factory started in the 1740s in Vincennes, to be moved to Sèvres in the 1750 under the protection of Madame de Pompadour, the chief mistress of Louise XV and great benefactor to French art and culture. The plates have a band of fabulous hunting scenes full of animals and meandering foliage and trailing branches, a gilt geometric pattern on the inside to the centre of each item, which has a rich gilt pattern surrounding a star. There are small reserves of iron red medaillons of trophies. The animals portrayed are fantastic dogs, boars, birds of pray, snakes, pheasants and deer, some hunting each other, others running by themselves. The decoration has very rich autumnal colours. As King Louis Philippe had to abdicate and flee France in 1847, it is likely that the service was sold off like so many other French treasures of the time. Today many parts pop up elsewhere in the world. The items are marked with the red Fontainebleau mark, inscribed Sèvres marks with the month and year of production, and blue and green Sèvres...
