First Period Worcester Porcelain Holly Berry Pattern Tea Bowl and Saucer

About the Item

First Period Worcester Porcelain Holly Berry Pattern Teacup and Saucer, Hop Trellis Pattern, Circa 1775. The First Period Worcester porcelain teacup and saucer has a reeded French shape and is richly decorated with the Holly Berry pattern- a variation of the Hop Trellis pattern. Panels of purple plants alternate with berried foliage between borders of lilac diaper and gold herringbone and a lower border of white pearls on a bright turquoise ground. There are gilt dentil rims and the inside of the cup has flowers and berried sprigs below a gold band. Dimensions: Overall: 2 3/8 inches high x 5 1/4 inches wide; Saucer: 5 1/4 inch diameter x 1 inch high; Cup: 1 7/8 inches high x 4 inches wide x 3 3/8 inches deep. (overall 6.033 cm high x 13.34 cm wide) Mark: Cup with a gold crescent. Sometimes known as the Holly Berry pattern, this striking design is a member of the Hop Trellis family of Worcester patterns inspired by Sèvres. A similar teacup and saucer was in the Peter Merry collection sold at Phillips 8 June 1994, lot 303. Another was in the Zorensky collection, part 3, lot 190. Two further cups and saucers were exhibited by Albert Amor Ltd., Dr Wall Worcester, The Brilliant Years, 1998, catalogue no. 2. Reference: Worcester Porcelain, 1751-1790, The Zorensky Collection, Simon Spero and John Sandon, Page 296, #362 for an identical example. The authors state that this is one of the most elaborate and colorful of the many variations of the Hop Trellis pattern inspired by Sevres. This pattern is nearly always found on teaware.
