A Chinese Porcelain Soup Plate for Export, Qing Dynasty
About the Item
Soup plate, in Chinese porcelain for export. Qing Dynasty, Daoguang period (1820-1850).
Polychrome decoration with landscape and famille rose flowers. The composition of the dish is asymmetrical and dynamic, with an exuberant floral pattern occupying a large part of the surface. The flowers, in shades of pink, orange and green, are painted with extreme precision, accompanied by sinuous branches and leaves, which add movement to the piece. The soft brushstrokes and transparency of the enamels demonstrate the technical mastery of the artisans of Jingdezhen, a center of excellence for porcelain production in China.
In the center, a charming scene with a border and rocks stands out, next to a geometric object, possibly a stool or an ornamental structure. Beyond the edge sprouts a set of flowers in shades of pink and orange.
The edge of the plate is decorated with a continuous floral pattern, where small twigs and butterflies intertwine gracefully, creating a delicate and balanced effect. The softness of the colors and the lightness of the composition indicate that this piece was made for a European audience that appreciated natural motifs and bucolic scenes.
During the 19th century, porcelain like this was widely ordered by European aristocrats, being used both for decorative purposes and in sophisticated dinner services. This plate represents an excellent example of the fusion between traditional Chinese aesthetics and the European preferences of the time, reaffirming the prestige of Chinese porcelain in the global market.
