Antique English Porcelain Sugar Box by Worcester Thumb & Finger Pattern C. 1820

About the Item

Hand-painted circa 1800, this porcelain sugar box by Chamberlains Worcester features the elegant 'Thumb and Finger' pattern, rendered in deep cobalt blue and enriched with fine gilding. The surface is decorated with vibrant floral motifs, including iron-red water lilies framed by lush green leaves. Its vivid palette and striking composition embody the confident style and refined craftsmanship that distinguish Chamberlains Worcester porcelain of the early 19th century. Pieces from this period are celebrated for their decorative flair and technical finesse—both beautifully expressed in this example.. The combination of design and color is fabulous! Marks: Inside the cover is the Chamberlains Worcester No 276 mark in puce (the mark was in use from 1786 to 1810). Dimensions: 7″ across the handles x 4″ wide x 5″ to the top of the finial Condition: Excellent with the very slightest rubbing on the top of the finial (see images). Price: $ 780 Background of Chamberlains Worcester: Robert and Humphrey Chamberlain established their porcelain factory in Worcester in 1793 after successfully decorating and gilding porcelain from the original Worcester factory. During the Regency Period, Chamberlains Worcester enjoyed royal patronage. The factory gained fame for its artistry, producing many patterns inspired by 18th-century Japanese and Chinese wares.

This set of antique Flight Barr Barr Worcester dessert dishes are marked with an impressed crown over "FBB," showing that Flight Barr Barr was a purveyor to their Royal Majesties, the King and Queen of England. Made in England circa 1820, they are decorated in Worcester's "Strawberry" pattern. The dishes are painted in rich gold with strawberries on the palest peach ground. This 18th-century First Period Worcester Porcelain sugar box was hand painted featuring beautiful swags painted with green leaves, purple berries, and two-tone blue and yellow apples. Each swag is tied with a purple ribbon in an elegant bow. Green leaves and two-tone plums hang from each ribbon. The cover finial is crafted as a budding rose painted in gorgeous pinkish purple and yellow with two green leaves. The sugar box's border and cover are both adorned with a band of underglaze blue and a chain of golden ribbons and are gently lobed, which adds visual excitement as light plays over the curved surfaces. Made in England circa 1775, this sugar box is a gem!
