19th Century Large Majolica Asparagus Serving Platter

About the Item

A very unusual and beautiful French barbotine majolica asparagus serving platter, oval in shape and featuring a typical 'trompe l'oeil' textured decoration of globe artichokes and purple asparagus tips, artfully entwined with each other to create a pleasing colour palette of creams, greens, golds and purples. A small dish-shaped recess at the centre is designed to contain melted butter or vinaigrette, for delicious dipping French-style. Made in the renowned ceramic-producing Orchies area of north-eastern France, around the end of the 19th century. Please take a look at our other matching items, which include sets of individual asparagus serving plates of the same design.
