Vallauris Blue Ceramic Pitcher from the 1950s

About the Item

Ceramic jug with sculpture of a woman, created by Vallauris in the 1950s Ø cm 48 h cm 19 The production of ceramics in Vallauris began in the Gallo-Roman era, with the creation of bricks, vases and other everyday objects. In the 16th century, the city experienced a revival of ceramic production, thanks to the influx of Italian families who brought their expertise in ceramics. The 19th century marked a golden age for Vallauris pottery, with the emergence of numerous pottery workshops and factories. The Massier and Foucard-Jourdan companies were among the most important and produced high-quality tableware and decorative objects. The arrival of Pablo Picasso in the 1950s had a profound impact on the Vallauris ceramic scene. The artist became fascinated with local ceramic traditions and collaborated with local artisans to create a vast body of innovative ceramic works. His influence helped elevate Vallauris to international recognition. Today Vallauris remains a vibrant center for the ceramic arts and crafts. Numerous talented artists and artisans continue to produce a wide range of ceramic pieces, from traditional pottery to contemporary art. The city's annual ceramic festivals and exhibitions showcase the diversity and creativity of its ceramic heritage.
