Ornate Silver Pitcher with Bear Figure By Rogers, Smith & CO.
About the Item
There are a number of stamps on the bottom of the piece. The first reads "Patented by JAS. Stimpson 1854 Extended for Seven Years". James Stimpson was a noted Baltimore inventor who first received the U.S. patent for a multi-walled ice pitcher on October 17th, 1854. Stimpson's design was the precursor to the modern thermos or Dewar flask, having a double sided and double bottom configuration, thus keeping the ice water inside insulated. This kept the contents colder longer and minimized condensation in the pre-air-conditioned Victorian household. Ice would last three times as long in the Stimpson design as it would in common pitchers of the times.
