John Holloway Antique 1792 Sterling Silver Nutmeg Grater

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian English sterling silver nutmeg grater made by John Holloway; an addition to our silver boxes collection. This exceptional antique George III sterling silver nutmeg grater has a rectangular form with cut corners. The cover and body of this solid silver nutmeg grater are encompassed with impressive bands of linear and undulating pinstruck decoration, in a variety of parallel patterns. The cover of the antique silver nutmeg grater incorporates a central cartouche, bordered by further pinstruck ornamentation. The cartouche is accented with the contemporary engraved initials 'MJ' in addition to the engraved date '1794'. The hinged hallmarked anterior cover opens to reveal the steel grating grille. The underside of the box bears a secondary hallmarked flush hinged cover which allows access to the grated nutmeg; the flush hinge indicates the high quality of this piece of antique silverware. The underside of the box is ornamented with wrigglework decorated borders, in addition to further pin struck decoration paralleling the cover's hinge and anterior edge. Condition This antique silver nutmeg grater is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The pin struck decoration is all crisp. Full hallmarks to the interior of each cover are all very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from this fine example of Georgian silverware.
