Wheel-Cut glass Claret Jug, Stourbridge, C1850

About the Item

The height of English glass cutting, and a perfect example of the Victorian early neo-classical revival. Decorated with two Roman solidiers in a chariot drawn by two horses to the front, with classic honeysuckle and anthemion decoration to the back. This most certainly ranks as the best example of Stourbridge glass we've had. Attributed to Webb, but Richardson is also a possibilty. Stourbridge glass refers to glassware produced in the town of Stourbridge, located in the West Midlands region of England. Stourbridge has a long and rich history in glassmaking, dating back to the 17th century. The town became a significant center for the glass industry during the 18th and 19th centuries, gaining international recognition for the quality and craftsmanship of its glass products. The heyday of Stourbridge glassmaking was in the 19th century, though the tradition continues to some extent today. Collectors and enthusiasts value Stourbridge glass for its historical significance, craftsmanship, and artistic merit. Pieces of Stourbridge glass can be found in museums, private collections, and antique markets, showcasing the enduring legacy of this English glassmaking tradition.
