About the Item

Superb antique Baccarat crystal service, Davoust model, France late 1800s. The design of the service is nearly identical to the more famous Harcourt model with the most evident difference being the round foot; an advantage on the Harcourt model which can garner chips more easily due to its octogonal edges. The service is named after Louis Nicolas Davout, Duke of Auerstaedt, Prince of Eckmühl, was born on May 10, 1770, in Annoux, Burgundy, and died on June 1, 1823, in Paris. His last name is also spelled Davoust, as attested by field regiment documents and the inscription of his name on the East pillar of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. He was a French general of the Revolution and the Empire, elevated to the dignity of Marshal of the Empire by Napoleon in 1804. Composed of 84 pieces: 12 tumblers, 12 champagne flutes, 13 water glasses, 18 red wine glasses, 13 white wine and 16 liquor glasses. Louis Nicolas d’Avout, later Davout, came from a family of minor nobility, Davout first served in the army of the Ancien Régime before embracing revolutionary ideas and becoming, in 1791, battalion chief of the volunteers of Yonne. From then on, his advancement was rapid: brigadier general in July 1793, he participated in the Egyptian campaign under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte before being promoted to divisional general in 1800. He inaugurated his new command by taking charge of the cavalry of the Army of Italy, with which he distinguished himself at Pozzolo. On May 19, 1804, Napoleon, now emperor, elevated Davout to the rank of Marshal of the Empire. Davout played a major role in the Napoleonic Wars, notably at Austerlitz in 1805 and at Auerstaedt in 1806, where he routed the main Prussian army. In reward for this latter victory, the Emperor granted him, on October 25, 1806, the honor of being the first to enter Berlin. Davout later distinguished himself at the Battle of Eylau, before serving as the Governor-General of the Duchy of Warsaw. As the Commander-in-Chief of the Army of Germany in the Emperor's absence, he excelled in the German and Austrian campaigns, after which he received the title of Prince of Eckmühl. Deployed in Russia, where he led the First Corps, and then in Germany after the retreat of French troops, Davout entrenched himself in Hamburg and managed to resist allied attacks until the fall of the imperial regime. Passive under the First Restoration, the marshal rallied to Napoleon during the Hundred Days, who appointed him Minister of War. After the defeat at Waterloo, he retired to his lands in Savigny-sur-Orge. Considered Napoleon's best subordinate tactically, Davout is the only Marshal of the Empire to remain undefeated throughout his military career. With a difficult and demanding nature towards his officers, he was particularly severe on the training and discipline of his troops.

Baccarat

One of the world’s foremost crystal manufacturers, Baccarat has long been emblematic of luxury and exquisite craftsmanship. Starting in the early 19th century, objects produced by the French company — from stemware to chandeliers to brightly colored paperweights — became a staple of noble and wealthy households across Europe and as far afield as India. Along with the purity and quality of their glass, Baccarat crystal makers can boast a remarkable fluency with a range of design styles — from cut-glass neoclassical pieces to sinuously etched Art Nouveau designs.

Baccarat began as a kind of industrial development project. In 1764, the Bishop of Metz and other landowners in heavily forested northeastern France persuaded Louis XV to sanction a glassworks in the area — timber being a key resource required for the furnaces used in glass production.

In its early years the company produced humble products such as window panes and simple drinking glasses. In 1816 a new owner began making crystal, and seven years later Louis XVIII — who had taken the throne after the defeat of Napoleon — gave Baccarat its first royal commission, for tableware. In the ensuing years, an estimated one-third of the company’s workforce was dedicated to commissions to the Russian imperial court alone.

Spurred by the intense competition between global industries in the latter 19th century — fought in public view in the many world expositions of the era — Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat, as it had finally become known, elevated its level of artistry by adopting new technologies and creating a rigorous training program. The firm broadened its stylistic range, embracing Asian influences and new engraving methods, and increasing production of its now iconic millefiori paperweights.

The designer Georges Chevalier, who worked for Baccarat for more than five decades beginning in 1916, ushered the company into the realm of modernist design. In recent years, Baccarat has employed such renowned contemporary designers as Philippe Starck and Marcel Wanders, ensuring that Baccarat crystal will continue to enjoy pride of place on up-to-date tables.
