Small stoneware vase by Carl-Harry Stålhane, Sweden 1950

About the Item

Small stoneware vase by Carl-Harry Stålhane, Sweden 1950 Blue-rusty brown glaze with a smooth, organic shape. Model: SXH Excellent condition. Heigth: 10 cm/3.9 inch Diameter: 5 cm/1.9 inch Stålhane began his career at Rörstrand Porcelain Factory as a faience painter but later had the opportunity to work with the potter's wheel in the 1940s. He furthered his education at Grünewald's painting school and the Académie Colarossi in Paris. After his time in Paris, he explored various forms of ceramic art, influenced by Gunnar Nylund's work During the 1950s, Stålhane developed his own style with rough and closed form chamotte stoneware, characterized by abstract sculptures and earthy glazes. He quickly became a prominent artist in stoneware and took over the leadership after Gunnar Nylund. In the early 1960s, he experimented with heavier and modeled objects, leading to an increase in square shapes. While active at Rörstrand, Stålhane also worked as head teacher in ceramics and glass at the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg from 1963 to 1971. In 1973, Stålhane started his own business, Designhuset in Lidköping, where he continued his experiments with local clays and minerals. He collaborated with other designers and also carried out assignments for Bing & Grøndahl. In summary, Stålhane was a pioneering Swedish ceramic artist who, through his work at Rörstrand and later on his own, contributed to the development of ceramic art in Sweden.
