Japanese contemporary Kaneta Masanao ceramic Hagi vase

About the Item

Kaneta Masanao, is certainly one of Hagi pottery's most well-known and easily identifiable. He's part of the eighth generation Hagi potter and has expand beyond his hefty heritage to create a more sculptural oeuvre. His form have a strong and dramatic presence, his signature technique of Kurinuki, in which he digs or scoops-out a form out of the clay instead of shaping it on a wheel, further allows him to boldly depart from ancient Hagi traditions , and sets him apart from the work by other artists of the traditional Japanese ceramic forms. His work evokes a distinct tension between both function and form, technique and tradition. Kaneta Masanao exhibit in multiple exhibitions and museum, including the 400-year Hagi retrospective at the suntory Museum, and a major group exhibition at the Ibaraki Prefecture Ceramic Art Museum. Kaneta's works are also in public collections including over twenty internationals museums such as the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, Yamaguchi Prefecture Museum, Gifu Modern Ceramics Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Asian Art Museum, San Fransisco, and the Metropolitan Museum among many others.
