19th Century Wedgwood Queens Ware Creamware Gilt Pitcher and Basin Set

About the Item

Queens Ware is the mark on this pitcher and basin set made in England in the mid to late 1800s by Wedgwood. It is also known as creamware, a technique English potters used to achieve the tan color. The set is hand painted in soft beige and accented with yellow flowers on the pitcher and on the basin. A high glaze finish and gilt etching accent the pitcher and the bowl. The pitcher measures nine inches tall by 10.5 inches wide. There is a small hairline crack under the spout of the pitcher that is about two inches wide. Please see images. The basin measures 17 inches wide by 3.5 inches high. Queen Charlotte of England admired the "new line" that was developed as a British substitute for Chinese porcelain. The queen's endorsement helped popularize the line after she ordered a tea set in 1765 and allowed Josiah Wedgwood to call it :Queens Ware." Josiah Wedgwood guaranteed the longevity of Queens Ware in 1770 when he produced a creamware dinner service of 952 pieces for Catherine the Great of Russia.
