An Impressive French Napoleon III Style Gilt Bronze Surtout de Table, Circa 1900

Surtout de table are ornamental French trays, designed to be placed on a dining table as a centerpiece for formal occasions. Our Napoleon III-style surtout de table, which dates to circa 1900, would make an impressive addition to any dining table.
Measuring over 50 inches long and 32 inches wide, this surtout de table features a large piece of shaped glass encircled by an animated scene of a putti hunting party. In each corner of the frame is a pair of gilt bronze putti, facing in opposing directions, armed with a spear. All the cherubs are resting on curled leaves that emerge from a pierced, segmented console. The foliage, which has a fluted ground, continues around the frame, enhancing the sinuosity of the mirror. Depth is added in the form of the numerous gilt bronze hunting dogs that are giving chase to scattered wolves and deer. Elegant centerpiece in finely chiseled vermeil. Composed of a Baccarat cut-crystal cup from which emerge four sinuous light-arms. The whole rests on a scalloped mirrored tray adorned with foliage, with a molded contour of wrapped rushes and ending with four openwork feet.
The two French goldsmiths George Boin and his son-in-law Emile Taburet created circa 1875 in Paris the company Boin-Taburet. They made many silver pieces inspired by the beautiful services of the eighteenth century. At the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878, Georges Boin presented a “service de toilette” inspired by the work of François-Thomas Germain (1726-1791), and then at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, several epergnes, including one of them executed after drawings by the famous artist Juste-Aurèle Meissonier (1695-1750), as well as tea sets of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. Made of solid silver, both silver pieces are fully marked, 800 silver with the maker's mark. This substantial and beautifully-crafted neoclassical centrepiece
was made in the 1920s and will look perfect on a hall/lobby table or in the dining room.
The large silver tray is mounted on a wooden base and secured with brackets. The outside rail has a tube border with scallop shells. The polished surface of the silver tray is in very fine condition for its age and gives a good mirror to the light. The design motif is continued on the silver collar which slips over a copper liner. The copper liner-basket is cut to an exact outline and fit so that a floral arrangement can be executed elsewhere and then dropped into position.
For convenience, this item comes with a cut crystal vase saint Louis of suitable height and shape which sits inside the copper lining. The crystal vase may be 'associated', it cannot be verified that it was originally supplied with the rest of the set, but it is of the right period and style.
