Surtout de table are ornamental French trays, designed to be placed on a dining table as a centerpiece for formal occasions. Our Napoleon III-style surtout de table, which dates to circa 1900, would make an impressive addition to any dining table.
Measuring over 50 inches long and 32 inches wide, this surtout de table features a large piece of shaped glass encircled by an animated scene of a putti hunting party. In each corner of the frame is a pair of gilt bronze putti, facing in opposing directions, armed with a spear. All the cherubs are resting on curled leaves that emerge from a pierced, segmented console. The foliage, which has a fluted ground, continues around the frame, enhancing the sinuosity of the mirror. Depth is added in the form of the numerous gilt bronze hunting dogs that are giving chase to scattered wolves and deer. Stunning and extremely rare Georgian Irish Heavy Gauge hand cut crystal fruit bowl or centerpiece of traditional outline, of outstanding quality and condition. Circa 1800 - 1825.
The unusual fan-cut decorative rim above a deep cut diamond pattern all-round body with a single ring stem socle, ending on a circular base with star cut pattern underneath. Made in Ireland in either Waterford or Belfast. This piece is unmarked, early pieces were not usually. *This piece is over quarter of an inch in thickness allover.
Condition: Good condition for such an early piece of rare Irish glass. No inside clouding, wonderful evidence of age wear at base underneath, few flea bites to top rim, difficult to see.
Measures: Diameter: (at widest) 5.75” (14.75cm). Height: (just over) 5” (13cm).

Adding profound historical value are two engraved plaques. The first, dated “January 28, 1859,” reads: “Presented to William Johnson Esq. as a token of respect & esteem by the workpeople in the employ of Messrs Richard Johnson & Brother, Manchester.” The second, an inscription from 1941, states: “Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers, Alias Wire Workers of the City of London, Presented by Arthur Laurence Johnson M.A., Grandson of William Johnson, both Wire Workers, with his Daughter Eleanor Morton Johnson, a Freeman of the Company, to commemorate his Mastership 1941-42.”
